In December 2007, a group of students and three teachers (Daniel Andersson, Åke Sander and Clemens Cavallin) of religious studies at Gothenburg University travelled to India for a month of experiences, studies and developing of contacts with Indian universities. This was the beginning of a series of activities at the Department of Literature, History of Ideas, and Religion directed toward facilitating both student and teacher exchange with India.
The impressions and reflections of those who participated in this first journey east are gathered in the volume India on my mind which is available as Open Access (though in Swedish).
In 2009, the same teachers made a second expedition to Delhi and Varanasi with new students.
During 2010 the cooperation between the centre in Lund and LIR in Gothenburg has been forged through meetings at both universities. The last part of this process before the joint field course was a contact journey in November and December 2010 to universities in North India (Delhi, Patiala, Varanasi and Kolkata), and a conference in Kolkata.
In the spring semester 2011, a fully fledged field course was conducted in cooperation with the Centre for Theology and Religious Studies at Lund University.
From 2011 LIR:s coopoeration with India is a part of go:india, a project at the University of Gothenburg promoting exchange and cooperation with Indian universities.
