The department offer courses in Religious studies and Theology at the advanced level (Second Cycle) in English.
The studies for a degree in the Second Cycle normally take one year - the Degree of Master (One Year/60 Higher Education Credits) - or two years - the Degree of Master (Two Years/120 hec). Courses in this cycle assume that you have studied in the First Cycle. To be qualified for a programme that begins in the Second Cycle, you must fulfil the degree requirements in the First Cycle of 180 hec, or have corresponding previous knowledge.
The links below are to the course catalogue of University of Gothenburg, where you can read more about the courses.
Christian Studies, Course 1, 15 hec
You start to focus on one field within the history of Christianity. Thereafter, you will study the history of the philosophy of religion, value theory and fundamental theology. Finally, you specialise within one of these three fields.
Christian Studies, Course 2, 15 hec
With supervision from the teacher, you further specialise within a particular field that has been treated in Christian studies course 1.
Exegetics, course 1, 15 hec
You follow one of two tracks: if you have previously studied exegetics in Hebrew or Greek you follow the linguistic track, if you have previously studied exegetics without Hebrew or Greek you follow the non-linguistic track. You chose specialisation and literature based upon a set of reading lists within the field of exegesis.
Exegetics, course 2, 15 hec
You who have studied Exegetics course 1 can within this course further deepen your studies within the field of exegesis.
Field Course, 15 hec
Theory and Method in Religious Studies, 15 hec
A set of theoretical and methodological issues of vital importance for the study of religion will be presented in depth and discussed in the first subcourse. In the second subcourse, you can choose from a set of course literature that focuses on theoretical and methodological questions relevant to specific empirical materials, for example, Biblical texts or Hindu village life. Although reading different course literature, all students will follow the same seminar.
Religion, History and Society, course 1, 15 hec
In subcourse 1 "The history of religions" you will choose literature from a list of options focusing on particular geographical areas at a certain time period. Not just one religion, but a landscape of religions, is thereby studied. In subcourse 2 "Religion and late modernity" you will choose course literature from a list of options focusing on central issues for the study of contemporary forms of religious life. The perspectives are foremost of a sociological or a psychological nature. The teaching is conducted in the form of obligatory seminars common for all students taking the course.
Religion, History and Society, course 2, 15 hec
The course provides further specialisation in two subfields within religious studies with an emphasis on historical, sociological and psychological approaches. You will choose course literature from a list provided by the examiner.
Degree Project, Master of Arts (Two Years), Religious Studies, 30 hec
As a degree project you write a thesis that shows that you can work independently according to a scholarly method. You choose the subject from one of the following fields: Christian Studies, Exegetics or Religion, History and Society. Literature and focus is chosen together with the supervisor at the beginning of the course. You actively participate in the work of the seminar of religious studies and theology. You will defend your thesis and act as opponent of the thesis of another student.
