I work as a historian of religion, and was awarded my doctorate by Lund University in 2011 for a thesis on Buddhism and meditation in Sweden. I have been employed as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Literature, History of Ideas, and Religion since 2012. Here I work as a researcher and a teacher of Indian religions (especially Buddhism and Hinduism).
My main research interest concerns the continuation and change of religious traditions when transposed to a new context, and in particular how Buddhist traditions are received and incorporated in a Swedish context and how individuals perceive and make use of these traditions. My research emphasises fieldwork designed to acquire new data on Buddhist traditions in Sweden.
My PhD thesis, published as Insikt och närvaro – akademiska kontemplationer kring buddhism, meditation och mindfulness [Insight and Presence – contemplations of Buddhism, meditation and mindfulness] by Makadam förlag, highlighted the development of Buddhist insight meditation, Vipassana, and the Burmese practice lineage originating from the lay meditation teacher U Ba Khin and his student S. N. Goenka. This study offers a broad and rich depiction of contemporary insight meditation, its historical circumstances, and the reception of meditation in both religious and secular contexts in Sweden. The study uses a variety of approaches and methods – such as fieldwork, interviews and conversations, survey and text analysis – and also applies theoretical pluralism to highlight the complex web of contemporary interpretations of which meditation is a part.
My postdoctoral research Thai Buddhism in Sweden – religion, gender and migration is funded by the Swedish Research Council and will contribute to new empirical knowledge of Buddhism and Asian immigration in Sweden. The study also aims to establish religion as an important category of migration research, and will develop a theoretical discussion of how, and to what degree, various religious organisations facilitate migrants' participation in civic society.
